Every transport quote starts with two questions: what are you moving, and how heavy is it? You do not need an exact figure. A realistic estimate is enough, and this guide shows you how to get one.
Why the weight matters
Weight decides which truck is suitable, how the load is spread on the deck and how much fuel the trip uses. A load that is heavier than you said can mean a second trip or a changed price on the day. A good estimate avoids both.
Start with the paperwork
The easiest and most accurate numbers are already written down. Check:
- Supplier invoices and delivery notes, which often list the weight per item or per pallet
- Product spec sheets and labels on the boxes or bags
- Previous transport documents for the same goods
Estimating a pallet
Take the weight of one box or bag, multiply by the number on the pallet, then add the pallet itself. A standard wooden pallet weighs roughly 20 kg. Wrapped pallets of dense goods such as tiles, tins or drums are often much heavier than they look.
Pallets of liquids are an easy one: one litre weighs about one kilogram. A 25-litre drum is roughly 25 kg plus the container.
Estimating furniture and appliances
For a house move or removal, count the large items and use rough weights. Treat the ranges below as a guide only:
- A fridge-freezer can weigh around 50 to 100 kg
- A washing machine is often 60 to 80 kg
- A three-seater couch can weigh 50 to 80 kg
- A double bed with a base and mattress can weigh well over 100 kg
Boxes add up quickly. Books and kitchenware are heavy even in a small box.
When you are still not sure
Round up rather than down, and tell the transporter that it is an estimate. Send photos of the load or the list of large items on WhatsApp. If it matters, the nearest weighbridge can weigh a loaded vehicle.
Do not forget the packaging, pallets, crates and straps. They are part of the weight on the truck.
Know the size limit
MDL Logistics moves loads from 1 ton up to 10 ton. One ton is 1,000 kg, so a few boxes is below our minimum. If you are somewhere near the 1-ton mark, ask us and we will tell you honestly whether a truck makes sense.
Need a truck for your load?
We move loads from 1 to 10 ton anywhere in South Africa. Read about our goods transport service or ask for a quote.
